I have searched various reputable websites for their online MBA rankings and here are the results.
I will admit that it is difficult to determine which online schools have the top MBA programs. Every ranking is different. However, here is the best information that I have gathered from various articles. I feel that when you are beginning your research about online MBA programs, your best bet is to turn to reputable sources.

Best Online Programs

One reputable source for business information is Bloomberg BusinessWeek at businessweek.com. According to the article “Where Are the Best Distance Learning MBA Courses?” at businessweek.com, the top MBA Programs are:
  • IE Business School (Spain)
  • Warwick Business School (UK)
  • Manchester Business School (UK)
  • Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University (USA)
  • Thunderbird School of Global Management (USA)
  • Tanaka Business School, Imperial College, London (UK)
  • SC Johnson Graduate School of Management, Cornell University (USA)
This ranking is from a 2008 article, but it is from a reliable source and I believe that these are still top schools.

Top Ten Online Programs

Macquil.com has another view of the top online schools. In their article “Top Ten Online MBA Programs”, they list several of the same schools as above, and more. (Note: Financial Times or FT.com is a very reliable source.) Everyone ranks schools differently and here is the distillation from Macquil.com:
  1. IE Business School Global MBA Program (Spain): This school is ranked #3 by Forbes, #1 by The Wall Street Journal, #6 by the Financial Times, #1 by The Economist.
  2. Thunderbird School of Global Management. (USA): Ranked #1 in International Business by Financial Times, ranked #1 in International Programs by US News & World Report.

  • Northeastern University’s Online MBA Program
  • Spears School of Business MBA Distance Learning Option
  • University of Texas at Dallas Global MBA Online
Because online MBAs are such a new phenomenon, MacQuil discloses that most of their rankings are based on the reputations of each school’s brick-and-mortar MBA ratings. Here are other schools worth looking into.

Kenan-Flagler Online MBA

The respected Kenan-Flagler Business School, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is accepting applications for its first online MBA degree. It will start in July 2011. The first class will only accept 50 people and the admissions criteria is the same as their on-campus program.

Brown University

There is no online university at Brown at this point. However, IE Business School in Madrid will start an EMBA program with Brown next year. Brown is one of the top Ivy League universities in the US.

CalUniversity

California InterContinental University is an online school dedicated to the study of business administration and management. It is not on the top MBA list, but it is worthy of your attention if you are in South Asia or one of the other countries where CalUniversity may go.
CalUniversity offers these business degrees:
  • DBA – Global Business Leadership
  • DBA – Entrepreneurship and Business Management
  • MBA – Banking and Finance
  • MBA – International Management and Marketing
  • MBA – Organizational Management and HRM
  • BBA – Marketing and Entrepreneurship
The interesting thing about this program is that they are working in partnership with universities in Pakistan, the UK, and India. It is something new, as of November 2010, and will become available in more countries soon. This program will allow students to complete their degrees for a fraction of the usual cost.
It has been argued that most good business schools will offer an online program in the future, however the trend is just starting.
